The main route of Samaria gorge is almost 14,3 kilometers from the Omalos plateau to Agia Roumeli village and 16,7 if you are counting till the beach. It is said to be the second largest gorge in Europe, after the verdon gorge in France.
On its top entrance, near the Omalos plateau, its called Xyloskalo (Ξυλόσκαλο), probably due to the fact that in the older days there was a construction from tree logs to help with the initial steep descend.
Samaria gorge lies on the Southern part of Chania prefecture and the western part of Crete. It is mainly formed from the White mountains mountain range and has two natural entrances.
The northern that starts from the Omalos Plateau and is the most common entrance and the Southern one that is located on the top of Agia Roumeli vilage near the sea.
Further down you will meet the iron doors (Sideroportes), which is the most narrow part of the gorge with a passage of about 3 meters and the rocks rising above 100 meters. This passage in one of the most impressive elements of the hike.
