General Information
Vasiliki Strata Gorge in a gorge that has been recently upgraded. It is a faιrly easy trail that is also suitable for children.
The Vasiliki Strata Gorge , located between Chosti village and the Omalos Plateau (Seliniotiko Gyro), is particularly easy and suitable even for children. The trail has recently been renovated. Starting from either end, you’ll find informative signboards detailing the route, difficulty, estimated time (1.5 hours), distance (5.25 km), and elevation difference. The path is well-marked, shaded in many areas, and features benches for rest.
However, note that upon leaving the trail near Chosti, signage may become temporarily unclear. The trail is beautiful and well-maintained, ideal for walking, running, or mountain biking, with gentle slopes.
It has somewhat easier uphills if you decide to start from Omalos and finish near Chosti village. The Vasiliki Strata, or Royal Path, has a historical significance, once used for transporting goods and people across Western Crete, and features stunning landscapes. The trail is partly paved with cobblestones(called Kalderimi in Greek), remnants of Venetian routes, offering a glimpse into the past. Despite some parts being steep and rocky, the overall gradient eases as you progress, making it accessible yet adventurous.
The word kalderimi, comes from the Turkish word kaldirim, that means path connecting villages and it was usually constructed for hoofed traffic of mules with a width of around 2 meters.

Gorge Hiking Duration
Hiking through Vasilikis Strata Gorge (Royal Gorge) typically takes around 1 to 2 hours to complete. The duration of course can vary depending on your pace, fitness level and the number of stops you may take.
Weather Conditions on Vasiliki Strata Gorge
Rainfall is rare during summer, but from December to May the region experiences more frequent rain and care must be taken not to go on the Gorge with bad weather conditions.
