General Information

Samaria Gorge is the second largest Gorge in Europe (after the verdon gorge in France) and one of the main tourist attractions on West Crete. The main route of Samaria gorge is almost 14,3 kilometers from the Omalos plateau to Agia Roumeli village and 16,7 if you are counting till the beach.

On its top entrance, near the Omalos plateau, its called Xyloskalo (Ξυλόσκαλο), probably due to the fact that in the older days there was a construction from tree logs to help with the initial steep descend.

Samaria gorge lies on the Southern part of Chania prefecture and the western part of Crete and was created by a small river that run between Mountain Volakias and the White Mountains. It is mainly formed from the White mountains mountain range and has two natural entrances.

The northern entry starts from the Omalos Plateau and is the most common entrance and the Southern one that is located on the top of Agia Roumeli vilage near the sea level.

Samaria Gorge Dates and Opening times

Samaria gorge is open only on Summer months. Usually between May to October. On Omalos you can find many family owned restaurants for a bite or a drink, that might be overwhelmingly full on a Sunny summer day or the weekend by locals. The area offers places for a nice walk or even some star gazing at nights, because the light pollution is quite low.

During the Summer months, from June to September, the weather is typically hot and dry, with temperatures often reaching above 30 °C (86°F). Thus heat, with the rather naked from trees gorge means that its crucial to stay hydrated and to protect yourself from the sun with sunscreen and the appropriate clothing.
